A*STAR’s robotics and automation teams develop capabilities in deep robotics and embodied AI to translate research into real-world solutions. In partnership with the National Robotics Programme (NRP) and public sector agencies, we work with industry to advance robotics innovation for Singapore.
Autonomous System and Robotics (ASR) Group
The ASR Group at ARTC is at the forefront of manufacturing innovation through intelligent automation. Comprising a multidisciplinary group of engineers, researchers, and technologists, the team is dedicated to developing cutting-edge robotic solutions that enhance industrial productivity, safety, and adaptability.
The ARS Group focuses on:
- Process robotisation to automate manufacturing processes through robotics solutions to improve process productivity and quality, as well as human health and safety.
- End-to-end robotics system design for industry via system conceptualisation, design, integration and virtual / physical validation.
- Mobile manipulation to achieve enhanced mobility and dexterity for intelligent manipulation and transfer through the development and deployment of mobile manipulators and humanoids.
- Human-robot collaboration to develop methodologies, architecture, and multi-modal sensor fusion methods to ensure the safety and efficiency of complex robotics applications involving humans and robots.

ROS-Industrial (ROS-I) Team
The ROS-I team at ARTC advances the development of interoperable and intelligent robotic systems for industrial adoption. By integrating ROS 2 with leading-edge technologies, the team aims to accelerate the adoption of smart automations that are modular, scalable, and future-proof.
The ROS-I Team focuses on:
- Adaptive motion planning to execute complex industrial robot manipulation tasks such as dynamic grasp planning and multi-arm coordination through ROS 2-based smart sensing and perception.
- Interoperable robotic systems designed to support connectivity and autonomy of heterogenous multi-robot, infrastructure and enterprise systems by using data-driven, AI-enabled digital twins of the shopfloor.
- Robust fleet management and execution systems for multi-robot traffic deconfliction, robotic execution and dispatch for large heterogenous fleet coordination and collision-free path planning.

The ARMG is a leading research group in SIMTech dedicated to advancing intelligent and human-centric robotics and automation solutions for the future of manufacturing. ARMG’s aims to empower Singapore’s high-valued manufacturing industries, especially those working in high-mix or high-precision settings, by providing high-performance, smart, flexible, and adaptive robotics and automation technologies.
The ARMG focuses on:
- Sensor-enabled smart actuator and control for high-performance robotics and automation systems (e.g., energy-efficient drivetrains, hybrid position-force control, intrinsically safe motion control).
- Flexible automation solutions through adaptive and soft material mechanisms and control, multi-physics process modelling and simulation for performance optimisation, and mechatronics parameter tuning for optimal efficiency. (e.g., automation assessment methodology, reconfigurable mechanisms, multi-modal adaptive grippers and mechanisms).
- Intelligent robotics through integrating artificial intelligence, robot vision and machine learning technologies to increase the agility of robotics solutions. (e.g., multi-modal perception for handling and manipulation, intelligent manipulation, data-efficient manipulation and learning).
- Innovative automation design and prototyping through 3D printing, PCB fabrication, and CAD software.

The RAS team at I²R is at the forefront of developing intelligent robotic capabilities designed to address real-world challenges in dynamic and unstructured environments. With the aim of enhancing workforce productivity and quality of life amid labour shortages and an ageing population, the team drives innovations in service robotics by equipping robots with multimodal perception, spatial awareness and tool-use skills for safe operation across industries, supporting Singapore’s national innovation goals.
The RAS team focuses on:
- Robust all-weather-all-terrain navigation to enable mobile and legged robots to navigate safely in crowded, unpredictable environments without prior mapping.
- Embodied perception and cognition with multimodal perception, spatial awareness and adaptive skills to handle complex tasks in dynamic environments, enabling intelligent, context-aware operation.
- Dexterous manipulation to enable safe and effective physical collaboration between robots and humans.

Social & Cognitive Computing (SCC) Department
The SCC Department at IHPC is dedicated to advancing human-centric artificial intelligence through interdisciplinary research that bridges computer science, psychology, linguistics, and social sciences. The SCC department's mission is to develop intelligent systems that understand, interpret, and respond to human behaviour, emotions, and social dynamics in meaningful ways.
The Cognitive Robotics Team in SCC focuses on:
- Human-robot collaborative AI capabilities that allow humans to collaborate more easily with robots.
- Social and behavioural modelling of humans to allow robots to understand human needs, preferences and intentions.
- Robotic simulation designs that are intuitive for robot training, testing and control.
